Captain Lorenzo Cooper York DMin, Chaplain Corps, U.S. Navy, Special Assistant for Pastoral Care/Command Chaplain at
the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, MD was awarded honorary membership in the Association of Professional Chaplains by the board of directors.
Honorary membership was awarded for Chaplain York's work in incorporating standards for professional chaplaincy into Navy hospital chaplaincy worldwide. He facilitated not only the commitment to professional standards and practice but also the development of a permanent process for ongoing training of Navy chaplains. A certificate of honorary membership in APC was presented by the Reverend George Handzo BCC, past president of APC, to Chaplain York as part of his Navy retirement ceremony held November 21, 2008 in Bethesda, MD.
Chaplain Lorenzo Cooper York is a graduate of The Interdenominational Theological Center (ITC) in Atlanta, GA, where he received a master of divinity degree (with honors) in pastoral counseling. He earned his doctor of ministry degree in formational counseling from Ashland Theological Seminary, Ashland, OH. He will join the faculty and staff at Ashland Seminary in January, 2009 as the director of the Doctor of Ministry program.
Commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force Reserve Chaplain Candidate Program in 1979, this Christian Church (Disciple of Christ) minister has served for 27 years on active duty. Starting as a "grunt chaplain" who was mentored by a Viet Nam vet Corpsman, Capt. York has served three sea tours, three Navy Medicine tours and six significant staff action officer assignments in Washington, DC.
He considers his most transformational tour the one in which he served as staff chaplain of the National Security Agency/Central Security Service at Fort Meade, MD, where he wrote over 600 electronic devotionals that ministered to a world-wide enterprise during the aftermath of the 9/11 attack on our nation. His visionary leadership also led to the establishment of a state-of-the-art Joint Service Chaplain Center.
Chaplain York's personal decorations include the Legion of Merit, Defense Meritorious Service Medal (One Oak Leaf Cluster), Meritorious Service Medal (Gold Star), Navy-Marine Corps Commendation Medal (Gold Star).
